Live and invest guide

To be able to benefit from the advantages of the NHR status, you must apply for tax residency with the Portuguese administration and you must not have been a Portuguese tax resident for the past five years.

For Portuguese tax residency:

  • You must have lived in Portugal for more than one hundred and eighty three days, consecutive or not, in the past year.
  • You must be able to prove that you wish to settle permanently in the country, through the purchase of property, a long term rental contract, or similar.

Retiring and relocating to Portugal

Are you retired and keen to relocate to Portugal? For British nationals, the process is straightforward when you are accompanied by the right partners.

If you wish to settle in Portugal permanently for more than one hundred and eighty days, you must apply for a residence permit from the Foreigners and Borders Service within three months of your arrival.

You will also need to obtain a tax identification number, which is required for most administrative procedures, and a certificate of residence that you can obtain from the parish council of your place of residence. Finally, British retirees are eligible for NHR status, which offers significant tax benefits.
